One hell of an adventure.THREE-TIME INTERNATIONAL AWARD WINNER<Gold Medal Winner: eLit Book Award for Sports/Fitness/RecreationBronze Medal Winner: 2018 Ippy Award for Sports/Recreation/FitnessFinalist: 2017 Book Excellence AwardsBiking from Alaska to Mexico solo is hard enough. But when you throw in bad weather, flat tires, hair-raising roadways, and unpredictable grizzly bears, only a fool would keep going.Fortunately, Jerry Holl was just the fool for this particular two-wheeled odyssey. Coming off a lifetime of corporate positions, he wasn't exactly prepared--his most trusted companion on the trip was a bike he didn't know how to fix. But inexperience and lack of a concrete plan didn't stop him. For fifty-one days, Holl pedaled his way across two countries, encountering everything weird and wondrous North America had to offer.Downhills Don't Come Free takes you through the ups and downs (literal and figurative) of Holl's ride. By turns amusing and reflective, self-deprecating and self-assured, it chronicles every aspect of the journey, from the breathtaking vastness of the Alaskan-Canadian wilderness to the fortitude, generosity, and eccentricity of the people he met along the way."...be prepared to want to quit your job and get out and see the world after reading this book--pedal on Kemosabe!"

Book Downhills Don't Come Free: One Man's Bike Ride from Alaska to Mexico Review :

Got this book because it sounded like a good adventure, but Jerry is just one of those guys that bought his way into doing something he was woefully unprepared to do, let others take up his slack, and the sheer competitiveness of this man's nature left most of the adventure on the road as he was too busy logging miles to even give a good account. Yes,he rode a bike and camped, but his biking skills and knowledge of bike mechanics left a lot to be desired of an adventurous story. This man was just lucky to make this trip in one piece. If not for the help and generosity of others, he would have been fodder for the wild to overtake. Very disappointing read by a guy I am sure I would not get along wirh, very "Alpha" male with testosterone dripping from his wallet.
Cool. Here's a story of a guy my exact age doing exactly what I'd like to do. The first half of the book, in which the author sets the background, outlines the plan, and learns day-to-day riding and survival skills, was fairly intriguing. In the second half of the book, though, the author turns to "the big questions" (appended in a list, as if you might need them) and I started to tune out. Most of these are presented as dialogs that don't sound at all like how anyone really talks, and most of his "insights" are not terribly insightful but common-sense stuff anyone reaching 60 years of age has probably learned (such as the platitudinous book title). Perhaps most disappointing about the tale in its entirety is that the author is a person who rushes through life. Once he has a goal, he has to complete it as soon as possible, which in this case means staying on the bike as many hours as possible in order to complete as many miles in the fewest days possible. Great attitude if you're riding a race, maybe not so great for a transcontinental journey. And by the way, the title is misleading. The author starts in Alaska and finishes in Southern California at the Mexican border. No riding at all in Mexico. For an account of a ride that goes into Mexico and all the way down to Patagonia, check out Jedidiah Jenkins' "To Shake the Sleeping Self."
